WormWorld for Windows
PC PLUS Special Version

The Files
---------
WormWorld PC Plus Special Version consists of the
following files:-
WORM.EXE - Main program
WORMEDIT.EXE - Level Editor (with Save feature
disabled)
*.WRM - WormWorld Levels
*.WAV - PCM Digitized Sound Files (used
internally within the program)
WORM.TXT - This text file
When distributing, please keep all the files with
the main program.
Note about Sound
----------------
WormWorld features digitized sound. You can only hear
digitized sound if you have a Soundblaster compatible sound
card, which is correctly configured for WINDOWS 3.1. For
those of you who haven't got a sound card, you can obtain a
speaker driver for Windows 3.1 to play back digitised sound,
although the quality of the sound may be bad, and the sound
may halt the system while it plays. The speaker driver is a
Microsoft driver and is available as P.D. Again, make sure
your sound hardware is configured correctly. Refer to your
Windows 3.1 Users Guide for help.
You can toggle digitised sound on and off from the
WormWorld program (note the default is ON) by opening the
Options Menu and clicking on the Sound On item. A tick
is placed by the item when sound is enabled, and is left
blank when it is disabled.
IMPORTANT! It is best to put the WormWorld directory
into the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file for the
digitized sound to work properly. This is because changing
directories to find a worm level will mean the program can no
longer find the sound files. An alternative to putting the
WormWorld directory into the PATH statement is to make sure
that the levels are kept in the same directory as the
level files.
The game
--------
This is a windows game requiring thought and reactions
to succeed. After loading the game, simply choose the Load
Level choice in the menu and choose a level. It is
recommended that you begin with the TEACH levels and complete
them in order before progressing to the harder DEVIL levels.
The game deliberately lets you load any level without first
completing the previous level. This is designed to reduce the
frustration level as when you get stuck, you can try another
level instead.
The concept
-----------
The main character is the worm. The worm is basically
a dumb animal and will not react in the most life-threatening
situations. You must guide the worm to the safety of the exit
tube by placing command blocks in his path to tell him what to
do.
The levels
----------
Each level is saved as a file on the disk. To begin
the game, go to the Game menu and click on Load Level. A file
dialog will come up allowing you to select the level you wish
to play. The levels always end with a .wrm extension. You can
make your own levels with the WormWorld editor.
The controls
------------
At the bottom of the screen there is a small bar of
three-dimensional icons. When you click the left mouse button
somewhere on the screen, the current icon will be placed on the
screen. The right button will erase an icon you have placed.
There are three icons:-
1.) Bridge icon. Place this icon in the worm's path, and when
he walks into it, he will create a bridge of green slime
in front of him to walk over. This command is useful for
travelling over pits.
2.) Anti-Gravity icon. If the worm is walking on the floor,
when he walks into this icon he will fall upwards and
start walking on the ceiling. If you place the icon in
front of him a second time, he will fall back down and
walk on the floor as normal. Note, you can build bridges
upside-down as well as the right way up.
3.) Stop icon. When the worm walks into this icon, he will
stop and turn around as if he had walked into a wall.
The stop icon will now disappear.
There is a number in each of the three-dimensional
icons. These are to tell you how many commands you have left.
When a certain icon is selected, your cursor will change to
reflect the icon.
The Blocks
----------
The WormWorld levels consist of different blocks.
These could be walls, or spikes, or other things that will
help or hinder the worm. A description of the blocks follows.
(i) Wall. This appears as red brick. The worm can walk
on this. If the worm walks into the wall, he will
stop and turn around.
(ii) Metal block. This appears as a grey block with rivets.
The metal block is just a different looking version of
the wall block. Its purpose is merely decorative.
(iii) Spikes. Appears as spikes facing up or spikes facing
down. The worm must avoid falling on these. If the
worm walks into the spikes from the side, he will turn
around as if it were a wall. This is because the side
of the spikes are not sharp.
(iv) Mud. This appears as brown dirt. The worm can stand on
this, but if he walks into it, he will eat through it.
Mud often supports blocks (see below).
(v) Movable block. This is a blue block. The worm can
push this along. If a block has nothing supporting it,
it will fall down. For example, if the worm pushes it
into a pit, or the worm eats through the mud underneath
it.
(vi) Exit tube. This appears as a golden tube. You must
make the worm fall into this to complete the level.
IMPORTANT!
You must obey the following rules if you use this
program. The program and its files may be freely distributed
by copying it, lending it, including it in a shareware
catalogue, or uploading to a bulletin board. When distributed,
ALL files included with this program must also be copied. You
must not change any file included with this program.
This is the PC PLUS Special Version of Wormworld. A
more developed version is now available for the small sum of
ú5.
